Notes
The 3G analysis indicated a need for four 3G FTPs in the Newton Abbot area. There is currently one (Devon CFA's pitch), which is at capacity.
Although the calculation stated there was demand for four, the steering group suggested a need for three. Pragmatically, this is due to the current land availability, flood risk areas, topography and proximity to pitches in other analysis areas.
One possible option is a new leisure centre which the Council is considering as part of the Newton Abbot & Kingsteignton Garden Community project, which will see 6,800 additional new homes delivered over a 20 year period. It is proposed to develop 2 11v11 3G FTPs as part of the project, which will be delivered in the lifetime of this plan.
A second option for one pitch is supporting Buckland Athletic (17 teams, England ** Accredited), at its Homer Heath site. If this project was to be considered, a partner club would also need to be aligned, as the club does not have sufficient teams to support a full 11v11 3G pitch programme (currently calculated at 38 teams).
Pitches in this analysis area will also support the following key clubs; Kingskerswell Colts (11 teams, England* Accredited), Watts Blake Bearne (21 teams, England** Accredited), and Watcombe Wanderers Youth (27 teams, England** Accredited). There are also 15 clubs with less than 10 teams in the analysis area.
Consultation with the RFU indicates that there is significant shortfall for midweek 3G training demand for Newton Abbott RFC and at least one 3G FTP should be WR22 compliant. Due to this shortfall, a programme of use for any potential future 3G FTP should be considered to accommodate the sports of both rugby and football.
